MEDIA ARTS PROJECT ANNOUNCES ARTIST GRANTS

Grants To Fund Interactive Installations by Regional Media Artists

Asheville, NC- The Media Arts Project (MAP) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 MAP Community Grants: Kinect, an interactive sound environment from John Brinker; and Excursus, a kinetic, multimedia sound performance from Sara Baird and Chris Perryman. Each project will be awarded $1500 and will be showcased at the {Re}HAPPENING in Spring 2012.

Grants were awarded based on three criteria: the synthesis of innovative artistic practice with contemporary technology; potential to foster a sense of community and outreach across disciplines; and ability to present at the {Re}HAPPENING 2012. The jury consisted of G. Craig Hobbs, Lorraine Walsh, and Brian Glaze.

“This grant is an opportunity for the MAP to directly fund local artists by helping to develop their projects, while simultaneously contributing to innovation and culture in Western North Carolina,” says Hilary McVicker, Chair of the MAP’s Board of Directors. “After the outpouring of creativity and support that made the {Re}HAPPENING events possible, we are thrilled to offer the WNC arts community direct funding for new work.”

The grant continues the work of the Media Arts Advantage Fund, a joint project between the Media Arts Project and Advantage West.  Over three grant cycles beginning in 2006, the MAAF offered financial support to artists and entrepreneurs whose projects helped to grow the region’s digital arts and culture. MAAF-funded projects, like the films On Coal River and Moon Europa, have gone on to achieve national recognition.
