CITY OF ASHEVILLE RECEIVES ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AWARD

North Carolina Municipality Recognized for New Media
Initiative Acknowledging the City of Asheville, North Carolina, for a new
economic development initiative, the International Economic Development Council
(IEDC) presented an award to the municipality at IEDC's Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
The city's Office of Economic Development was recognized for this achievement
during an awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 21st.
Competing in the category of New Media by organizations
serving areas with populations between 50,000 and 200,000, Asheville was a clear standout with
mapAsheville-Priority Places, an interactive mapping analysis application
designed to strengthen quality economic development investment in the City.
mapAsheville-Priority Places provides users the ability to search and analyze
key location factors based on priorities established by the user. It also
provides tapestry reports of demographic information on the selected priority
places.

The application is part of the mapAsheville suite of GIS-based tools
designed to provide information about the City. Other applications in
mapAsheville include Crime Mapper, which provides access to crime related
information and statistics by area; Development Mapper, which provides
increased access to information concerning large-scale development activities
in the City; and Asheville's
GIS application, which provides a streamlined interface for basic users, as
well as tools for direct access to the advanced GIS user's interface.
Sam Powers, Director of the Office of Economic Development
for the City of Asheville
recognized the city cross-departmental team, including the IT services
department, that developed the award winning new application. "The City of Asheville is successful
because of the talent of the many city employees involved in developing this
new tool that is designed to assist new and existing businesses make informed
business location decisions."

keystone in the quest to bolster the economy and improve quality of life in
every locality across the country," said Robin Roberts Krieger, IEDC
chair. "As the nation continues to tackle longstanding challenges in the
midst of an inhospitable financial climate, these efforts have taken on an even

municipalities like the City of Asheville
for leading the charge."

Media artist and dancer Jonah Bokaer coming to UNC Asheville this week!

"Three Cases of Amnesia"

The performance features Bokaer's
ground-breaking combination of multimedia and solo original modern dance.
Bokaer graduated from the NC School of the Arts
in Media Arts and Dance and was immediately recruited by the prestigious Merce
Cunningham Dance Company in NYC at age 18 - the youngest dancer ever
hired in the company's 55-year history. Continuing in his mentor Cunningham's
footsteps, Bokaer creates technically complex modern dance works that address
the human body's relation to 21st-c. digital technologies, such as motion
capture and 3-D animation. Named one of Dance Magazine's "25 to
Watch" in 2006, he has performed throughout the US,
Europe, Australia and Japan.

Lecture on Motion Capture, FREE>12:15-1:35pm,
Thurs, Nov. 13, Karpen Hall 012 Bokaer will explain and demonstrate how motion capture digitally records a
dancer's movements and incorporates them into a digital model for use in
presentation and performance. Jonah also addresses the use of motion capture
and digital media in POP and contemporary video and film such as The Matrix, walking participants
through the process in his discussion.

you heard about on Thursday as Bokaer works with UNC Asheville dance students
in this lecture demonstration that explores the software and techniques
integrating media and choreographic techniques.... See the dance studio as
a collaborative & creative space investigating the crossover of
Architecture, Media, Dance and Theatre. Bokaer intros much of the software
(PremiEre, ProTools, Digital Perform, Hyperprism, Flash, Dreamweaver,
Photoshop, Dance Forms, and Improvisation Technologies among others.) Bring
