MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dawn Roe (MFA, Illinois State University, BFA, Marylhurst University), divides her time between Asheville, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida where she serves as Assistant Professor of Art at Rollins College. Her recently completed project, Goldfields, was exhibited last year as a triple-screen installation in Melbourne, VIC, Australia at Screen Space Gallery (2012) and later traveled to The White Box at The University of Oregon PDX, Portland, OR (2013). "My process combines a documentary approach with direct interventions in the landscape and simple fabrications in the studio," says Roe. "Constructed scenarios are presented alongside seemingly ordinary views, calling the authenticity of both into question."

OFF THE MAP MONDAY MAY 27 featuring new media artist Rae Whitlock
Organized by The Media Arts Project, Off the MAP is a roaming arts symposium facilitating monthly discussions between artists and community. Off the MAP events highlight artists who fuse conceptual approaches to art-making with new technology and traditional media.
This month’s featured guest is new media artist Rae Whitlock whose interactive installations explore notions of gender identity, sexuality and social media. Her psychedelic video projections are created with common everyday items. “I like for the method of creation to be apparent,” says Whitlock. “I want viewers to engage with the work while still realizing it is a construct, not a reality.”
A portion of Whitlock’s installation //COMMENT!//SUBSCRIBE!// will be on view at Apothecary. Using QR codes, Whitlock showcases homemade teenage girl videos culled from the Internet.
7:00 PM
Whitlock will discuss the concepts and themes underpinning her work, with Q&A following.
8:00 PM
Whitlock performs with her husband, Dash LewisIn/Communicado which “explores communication, comprehension, confirmation bias and control, through a double-blind art happening.” Whitlock creates live visuals as Lewis develops a soundscape-- the caveat being that she cannot hear him (noise-cancelling headphones) and he cannot see her (blocked by a barricade). By working in parallel, they create what may appear to be a consistent piece, if only because you want it to be.
