For last spring's {Re}HAPPENING, we had a massive surge in artist participation, so we are now asking artists to apply if they want to participate in the 2013 event. It is an easy process, and we are changing things up a little this year. There are two ways to participate:
1. Highlighted Artist: These artists have the chance to develop and plan a piece of their choosing for the night of the event. Selected artists receive a free Indiegogo workshop to help fund their projects! The Media Arts Project will distribute a cash award directly to selected online fundraising campaigns. A leader in your artistic medium will be available to help facilitate the project on site, give feedback and answer questions along the way. Artists are notified of acceptance by January 15, 2013.
2. Chance Operations: This follows a more spontaneous creative path. Artistsʼ names will be randomly selected to create teams. Then, each team is matched with various elements to produce a brand new collaborative presentation/performance that premieres on the evening of {Re}HAPPENING 2013.
If you have any questions, concerns or circumstances you would to discuss please contact us via calltoartists@rehappening.com. We would be happy to talk it over with you!
DEADLINE FOR ALL ARTIST APPLICATIONS: DECEMBER 15, 2012
As a way to give back to our community in response to the incredible creativity and support that we received during the last two {Re}HAPPENING events, The Media Arts Project is using its proceeds from the 2010 & 2011 events to re-instate the Media Arts Project community grant series. The grant follows in the tradition of the Media Arts Advantage Fund (see below).
We are asking Western North Carolina based artists that work in the realms of Performance, Multimedia, Sculpture, Installation, New Media, Interaction, Sound, Photo / Video, Film & Web Art, to apply for funding to support a new or current project. The grant amount will vary according to the proposed project but requests should not exceed $1500. We will be giving out grants to two Western North Carolina- based artists for the 2011 grant cycle. More info is here.
The Daniel DeLaVergne Media Arts Advantage Fund gave direct funding to media artists working in or based out of Western North Carolina. The project’s primary goal was to foster regional talent through much-needed direct project funding; we also knew that successful projects would enhance the visibility and interest in all forms of media art, attract new talent to the region, and serve as a sustainable catalyst for the creative economy. The MAAF was a joint program between the MAP and AdvantageWest, the Western North Carolina Regional Economic Development Commission.
Each grant cycle was awarded by a panel of highly esteemed professionals from the local and national media arts community, assembled by the MAP Board of Directors. The award recipients were as follows:
2006
G. Craig Hobbs and Chris Bower, Moon Europa
Stewart Dickson, Three-Dimensional Zoetrope
Carlos Steward, Twin Rivers Media Festival
2007
Adams Wood, A Piece of Heaven
Michael Folliett, Version 2.0 Asheville
Pamela O'Connor, Allegory of the Cave
Bowie van Ling, Skyscraper
2008
Charles Llewellyn, Zenotopia
Gene Felice, The Screen Doors of Perception
Paul Schattel, Alison All Over
The fund was named to commemorate the life and work of Daniel DeLaVergne, an expedition videographer and MAP member. An international leader in whitewater cinematography. DeLaVergne brought technology to outdoor sports by enthusiastically developing content for pod-casting, blogging, video streaming and quarterly DVD magazines.
