UNC Asheville is hosting an International Human Rights Film Festival next week, and the Visualizing Human Rights "anti-conference" happens Saturday, November 14. The event brings the arts and artists to the endeavor of human rights. Theater, dance, poetry, 2D and 3D art, photography, and animation all work together to put a human face on himan rights.

Look for work/performances from The Beehive, Jinx Pace, DeWayne Barton, Ben Betsalel, and Heinz Kossler, among other artists and activists. The local organizers include Jolene Mechanic and Ken Betasalel, and it's sponsored by Amnesty International, the Center for Global Initiatives at UNC-Chapel Hill, the Human Rights Center at Duke, and the Elon University Department of Political Science. Heady stuff.

Highlights include a play about homelessness in Asheville and a discussion about human rights and photography. On Saturday night, "A Jerusalem Between Us" is a one-man show in black box format by Aaron Davidman. On Sunday afternoon, Global Playback presents a production called "Human Rights: Stories of Resilience and Hope."

And! It's all FREE. More info is here.

Along with The MAP, The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center will sponsor WHAT’S HAPPENING?!, a fundraiser dance party in the heart of the River Arts District of Asheville. This exciting event will raise money for the Museum’s “Living Legacy: Living Artists of Black Mountain College” exhibition series, and is part two of the official kick-off celebration to announce an exciting new series of Saturday Night Events at the original dining hall of the Black Mountain College.
Wedge Microbrewery will once again provide their most excellent, handcrafted beer. Come early to enjoy some nibbles and to view the art installation of BMCM+AC board member, Linda Larsen, downstairs in the Flood Gallery. There will also be a salon in the upstairs library, hosted by Jolene Mechanic, where you can learn more about the college, our organizations, and our exciting upcoming events series. More surprises are in the works—many will not be revealed until you arrive. At the last party, a Theremin station, an open mic and a projection show, courtesy of Gene Felice, were all impromptu additions. The new spin for this party: funk, soul and rock &roll. Come prepared to get your groove on (and support some great local arts groups!). Get on the good foot!
Join Jason Holland from the Dr Awesome show for an evening of the worst video he can muster. Expect the unexpected, but my guess is there will be some bad training films, bad commercials and bad public access shows. But that's just a guess. You'll have to show up to find out what all the hubub is about. Perhaps this Off the MAP event should come with a warning. Side effects may include: offended morals, abdominal pain and cramping, blurry vision, bleeding from the eyes, cluster migraines, irregular heatbeat, and vomiting.
Wray Bowling here! This year's Blender Conference being held in Amsterdam is going to be awesome. What's cooler is that this year I get to go, and not just as an attendant, but as a speaker. My talk will be on digital puppets, and of course how Blender can help you do such a thing. There's going to be plenty of other talks at Blender Conference, and as always the conference will be broadcasted live via the web. The catch is that since it's in europe you'll have to wake up pretty early in the morning to see what's going on as they're six hours ahead. The schedule isn't up yet. I'll update this when I know when I'll be on, and then you can watch in your pajamas before you go to work.

A dance party explosion and fundraiser for the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center & The Media Arts Project.

$7 for students, BMCM+AC & MAP members.
$10 for everyone else

Along with The Media Arts Project (MAP), the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center will sponsor HAPPENING, a fundraiser dance party in the heart of the River Arts District of Asheville. This exciting event will raise money for the Museum’s “Living Legacy: Living Artists of Black Mountain College” exhibition series, and is the official kick-off celebration to announce an exciting new series of Saturday Night Events at the original dining hall of the Black Mountain College.

Wedge Microbrewery will provide the beer. DJ Trevor Baker will be spinning records. Come early to enjoy the yummy food and to view the art installation downstairs in the Flood Gallery space. There will also be a salon in the upstairs library, hosted by Jolene Mechanic, where you can learn more about the college, our organizations, and our exciting upcoming events series.

Back in the day students and staff at Black Mountain College got together on Saturday nights to entertain each other with music, dance, poetry, theater or whatever they were moved to share.
“Saturday night parties were…a tradition at Black Mountain…for that one night in the week everybody put on shoes and dressed up: the women in dresses and stockings, the men in ties and jackets. Booze for the party was supplied by the student home-brew master on campus…” Michael Rumaker, Black Mountain Days

Starting this fall, the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and The MAP are hosting a series of Saturday Night dinner and entertainment in this vein but with a fresh new twist. So be at HAPPENING, Saturday, September 26 at the Phil Mechanic Building to revive the Black Mountain College Saturday night tradition. More information can be found at http://www.blackmountaincollege.org or by calling 828.350.8484

Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center preserves and continues the unique legacy of educational and artistic innovation of Black Mountain College for public study and enjoyment. We achieve our mission through collection, conservation, and educational activities including exhibitions, publications, and public programs.

The Flood Fine Art Center is a non-profit contemporary art organization dedicated to bringing excellent, provocative art to Asheville from artists working around the world. We seek out art that is provocative, challenging, daring, relevant, and important. We believe that there are great things happening in the world of art, and we want to bring those things to Asheville.

The MAP helps promote and grow the media arts in WNC. Founded in 2003, the MAP helped establish public access television for Asheville and Buncombe County. Since then, we have sponsored, incubated and hosted our way through many projects including HATCHAsheville, Quarks to Quasars, the 48 Hour Film Festival, and our monthly event: “Off the MAP”. We partner with projects that help create media arts jobs and opportunities in our region. Learn more at www.themap.org.
Visualizing world views:
Explorations at the boundaries of perception
David McConville, Media Artist + Researcher

Is it possible to effectively communicate an experience of reality? David McConville proposes a pragmatic framework for considering the unique perspectives we each have on the nature of reality. He demonstrates how integrating artistic and scientific approaches can experientially illuminate sensory limitations while raising awareness of the ways in which we create our own unique "maps" of reality. Gaining a deeper appreciation of how worldviews are formed is essential if humanity is to successfully address the interconnected challenges of the 21st century.
Asheville Filmmakers Group (AFG) is pleased to announce that they are fortunate, one more time, to have a generous host speaker, independent documentary filmmaker and former ABC, NBC, and CBS news producer, Joe De Cola. Joe is traveling from NYC to speak at the August AFG monthly meeting this Wednesday. He has produced such shows as "Close Up", a one hour documentary show for "60 Minutes" on CBS, as well documentary shows for NBC Nightly news and the Today Shows. He has received a number of awards including a News Emmy for his work on NBC Nightly News Series “The New Cold War”.

Join AFG this Wednesday as this is a great opportunity to find out more about documentary movie making, producing in general, and ask questions on what exactly does a producer do and how they get their projects produced from A to Z.

This week the MAP will be screening the Everything is Terrible DVD. Very similar to the wildly popular Found Footage Festival, Everything Is Terrible is a melange of found VHS footage mashed into it's essential bits. In the tradition of TV Carnage, footage is compiled of workout tapes, bad movies and PSA's. So painful, you really don't want to watch it alone, so you might as well be with us at Bobo!

Transfigurations 2009: Celebrating five years of Harvest Records

This gathering in our hometown is the culmination of two people sharing a mutual love for creating a space dedicated to the discovery of music. August 2009 has always been a pivotal goal in Harvest Records' history, a sort of nearly-invisible summit; to celebrate reaching this goal, Transfigurations brings together the spirits of the musicians that we have brought to this city, the artists who have displayed on our walls, the sounds people have found in our shop and the togetherness that we have attempted to breathe into the community...hour by hour, day by day.

Our focus has been to provide a venue for the sharing of ideas, hard work, and striving to live out envisioned ideals. We hope that all attending Transfigurations will connect with this, and perhaps we can all continue to evolve and adapt together.!
Physicist Michael J. Ruiz, will talk on “Scientific Foundations in Art and Music” at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, 56 Broadway St., in downtown Asheville. Ruiz’s talk will explore the connections between visual art and music such as linear perspective and the cycle of fifths. The presentation will include multimedia with animation, video and sound clips. Audience members will gain a new appreciation for the structural foundations that make visual art and music compelling.

Ruiz is a professor of physics at UNC Asheville with a doctorate in theoretical physics. He is also a pianist and composer. His innovative multimedia teaching techniques have been featured on CNN.

He received the university-wide UNCA Distinguished Teacher Award in 1995, the divisional Teacher Award in the Natural Sciences in 1997, and the 2004 UNCA Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, becoming the first faculty member at UNCA to receive the three major university teaching awards. He is also a Co-Founder (1987) of the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research.
Admission is $7 or $5 for the arts center members and students with ID.

Ruiz’ talk is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Dorothea Rockburne: Astronomy Drawings which is part of BMCM+AC’s year-long celebration of the women of Black Mountain College. A student at Black Mountain College in the 1950s, Dorothea Rockburne is a highly influential contemporary artist whose innovative work incorporates ideas based in mathematics and astronomy. Rockburne credits her deep interest in the intersection of art, nature and mathematics to Black Mountain College mathematics professor Max Dehn. A friend and associate of Albert Einstein, Dehn was a beloved member of the BMC community

Come join the MAP for some drinks and eats as we celebrate the launch of our new online directory.

Be sure to be there by 6:15 when Robert Zimmerman will be giving a live tour of the site.

Here's the official press release info:
The Media Arts Project (MAP) announces an event to celebrate the launch of its new website and online member directory, Thursday, July 23, at 5:30pm at the Flood Gallery in Asheville. Funded by the Asheville HUB, the new directory will foster the development of Western North Carolina’s creative economy by promoting the region’s diverse and accomplished talent base and providing a resource for WNC media arts professionals to collaborate and connect, both with one another and with opportunities for work. The July 23 event will showcase the site and its capabilities to the region’s artistic and professional communities.

In the new directory, MAP members will upload their portfolios to profile pages that specifically list their skills, experience and availability. Artists can communicate through blog posts and forums, and promote events through the site’s calendar. The site also includes functionality for demand-side members, businesses in search of media talent for specific objectives. A demand-side member might be a filmmaker on location in WNC who needs a boom operator, a growing company in need of a designer to build a corporate identity, or a journalist who wants to create podcasts of her work and add them to her website. Through the MAP directory, demand-side members anywhere in the world can access the dynamic community of accomplished media arts professionals in WNC.

Enter the Mind of Moog will be a golden opportunity to experience a working version of the planned Moogseum as the Bob Moog Foundation will transform the Orange Peel into an educational sonic playground for all ages. Upon entering the venue, attendees will be immersed in an interactive experience guiding them through the work and life of synthesizer pioneer and innovator Bob Moog. All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Foundation’s hallmark project, the Moogseum, to be located in Asheville, NC.

Interactive instrument-based exhibits will be set up to connect attendees to the unique sounds and interfaces that helped make the Moog name a legacy in the worlds of science, music and innovation. Highlights include a “Theremin Tour”, where visitors will be guided by Bob Moog Foundation volunteers to play the early electronic musical instrument in various audio configurations as well as see it used as a video mixing tool, the “Synthesizer Lounge”, comprised of a bay of synthesizers available for attendees to explore and the Moogerfooger Remix Station which will highlight the power of the the Moog signal processing tools. Attendees are encouraged to bring their iPods or other playback devices to remix original music through Moog equipment.

The Interactive Timeline will guide the viewer through specific eras of Moog’s career and document the evolution of the Bob Moog Foundation. The Bob Moog Foundation will unveil a Mini-Moogseum installation to be featured permanently at the Orange Peel. The Mini-Moogseum, a beautiful showcase crafted by Chris Perryman of Domus Aurea Woodworking, will house a small exhibit of the pioneer’s archives, tell the story of his impact on the world of music, highlight his connection to the Asheville community and feature a custom built theremin, designed by Bob’s former student and protege, Steve Dunnington.

Throughout the evening, four Bob Moog Foundation House Bands (comprised of four all-star bands of local artists) will be recording a four song album live on stage. These songs will be recorded as if in a studio with each musician layering their part individually over one another. At the end of the recording process, we will have an EP album ready to be mixed. The songs will then be performed live by each band that recorded them. The original songs composed for the occasion pull from four different genres: acoustic, funk, indie rock and pop.

Jay Sanders will lead the acoustic selection of the evening, with each acoustic instrument being treated to some special Moog electronic processing. Jeff Knorr will use Moog equipment in the creation of a funk song; the drumming, Moog synthesizer as the bass and electric piano will all be processed through Moogerfoogers. Josh Phillips – will feature Josh’s vocals layered on top of Mooged-Out drums, bass and guitar. Joey Szabo will lead a song featuring the Theremin as the lead instrument accompanied by drums, bass, guitar, and vocals.

Our silent auction will include such items as a Moog Little Phatty Synthesizer and a full day of recording at Echo Mountain Studios.

Finally, in celebration of the pioneer’s 75th birthday, there will be a display of 10-12 birthday cakes designed and donated by area artisan bakeries. The cakes will be judged by a panel of judges for their originality of design and concept. At the end of the evening, we will be sharing these cakes with all attendees.

Cake for everyone! Join us for an night of sonic exploration and celebration!
HATCH Asheville plans to host a special fund-raising event, held February 12th at 7pm in the downtown Asheville contemporary home furnishings retailer, Mobilia, on Haywood Street.

The event’s concept is to create five-minute one-on-one networking opportunities for the purpose of bringing together creative professionals across various industries to initiate collaborations and future business relationships.

Tickets for this event are $25. Please visit HATCHasheville.org to purchase tickets. All proceeds to benefit HATCHfest Asheville. Mobilia is located at 43 Haywood Street, downtown Asheville.

This particular aspect being part of the multi-pronged philosophy and goal of the inaugural HATCHfest Asheville event (being held April 15-19th, 2009), which is to educate and inspire creativity through mentorship and networking.

The attendees will be organized similar to that of a “speed-dating” event, in which participants will have the opportunity to connect personally during the five-minute segments throughout the 2 hour timeframe-with an estimated 20-30 others in multiple creative fields. Attendees are asked to bring any of their own marketing collateral, business cards and other material to share.

In addition, guests are provided beer, beverages and pizza supplied by Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company.

The success of an event such as this depends on an intimate atmosphere- so space for participants is extremely limited.

The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design will host a film screening at the Fine Arts Theatre in Asheville, NC on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 at 7:00 PM giving the public an opportunity to preview two hours of the series.

Admission is $5, free for students.
The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design (CCCD) will host "Soul's Journey: Inside the Creative Process" Jan. 23 - April 25, 2009. This exhibition features 22 accomplished contemporary object makers living in the Southeast - from Virginia to Florida - and working in ceramic, fiber, glass, metal, and wood. The exhibit developed from is a six-part documentary series (of the same name) illuminating the creative process through an intimate view of these working artists told largely through their own words. The film was conceived and produced by David Hutto, Vice President for Technology at Blue Ridge Community College, and videographer Chanse Simpson.

Additionally, CCCD will host a reception in their gallery on Friday, February 20, 2009, giving the public an opportunity to meet some of the artists who attend.

The exhibition complements the documentary, showcasing significant works by established and emerging artists, representative as much of the ethnic, gender and geographic diversity as the area's creative tradition and cultural heritage.

The work is conceptual with a strong visual (though not always material)
presence, subverting conventional assumptions of skill, perfection or
precious materials. In this way it questions perception of the art
object’s value.

The exhibit will feature an enormous shadow; a coin-operated light
painting that invites the viewer to draw on the wall; and the
reflections of numerous mirror circles. Alongside these are various
installations including a collection of glowing, imperfectly molded wax
bottles; a painting (displayed as a coffee table) that bears the scars
of a gravel driveway; and three plastic tubs of recycled cartons lit by
cheap Christmas lights.
