GRANT APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Introduction

The Daniel DeLaVergne Media Arts Advantage Fund is a joint program between the Media Arts Project (MAP) and AdvantageWest, the Western North Carolina Regional Economic Development Commission.

MAP Overview

Western North Carolinas Media Arts Project was established in 2000 to promote media arts in and around Asheville. Composed of creative professionals and artists throughout the region, the MAP was formally incorporated in early 2004 and aggressively pursued the goal of cultivating arts and media through the use of innovative technology. The MAP provides exhibition programming, professional development, outreach, and education, driven by the belief that the media arts are integral to a vibrant cultural and economic life.

Fund Overview and Objectives

The purpose of the Fund is to provide support to media artists working in or based out of western North Carolina. Awards will be based on applicants artistic merit and the strength of their submitted proposal. The Funds primary goal is to foster regional talent through much needed direct project funding. Successful projects will enhance the visibility and interest in all forms of media art, attract new talent to the region, and serve as a sustainable catalyst for the creative economy.

Selection Criteria

The selection of proposals is based on the following elements:
  • Submission of all required materials as described below by the deadline
  • Innovation and creativity relevant to media arts as described below
  • Ability to produce high quality work suitable for public presentation

Selection Process

Prior to each grant cycle, the MAP board will determine a Judging Panel and Total Award Amount. The Judging Panel will consist of at least three but no more than seven highly esteemed professionals from the local and national media arts community. The Total Award Amount will be determined based on the existing Fund amount and the planned income in the foreseeable future. In order to promote sustainability of the Fund, the MAP board will limit the Amount to no more than 50% of the total Fund per grant cycle.

After a technical qualification process by AdvantageWest administrative staff, the MAP board will forward all relevant applications to the Judging Panel. Each panelist will review his or her applications and select those that best address the selection criteria with special attention to the Funds goal of fostering regional talent through direct project funding. Any attempt by an applicant to communicate with any of the judges on the panel will result in the disqualification of that applicant from the judging cycle. The panel will convene together in western North Carolina to jointly select the winner(s). Materials are reviewed and voted on by the panelists in elimination rounds that produce a smaller pool for each round. A candidates advancement is a product of the collective vote of the panel. The Judging Panel will notify the MAP board in writing with a listing of the winning applications and the portion of the Total Award Amount for each winner.

Artists may be awarded grants at all career levels. The MAP does not discriminate based on the ethnicity, sexuality, or ability/disability of artists, and welcomes work whose content reflects the lived experiences of the applicants.

Grant Categories

The Media Arts Advantage Fund is intended to serve the greater interests of media arts and the regions talented artists. Therefore while there are no specific categories applicants must adhere to, it should be noted that the Fund awards project-based activities - Proposals should lead to the completion of a high-quality work suitable for public presentation or distribution.
